Hard Days

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Some days are just really hard. She won't settle. Nothing you can do helps. All you can do is make sure her nappy is clean, ensure she's had enough food & then walk. And walk. And walk. In the pram she's sleeping. And hopefully when she wakes up all is ok.

How fabulous does this movie look? The glitz, the glamour. Once again Baz Luhrmann creates movie magic.

Frockin' up - Last Tuesday

Last Tuesday was a bit of a frockin' up day. During the day Lulu rocked some bling on her Bonds onesie:

Weekend Adventures

Monday, May 28, 2012

1. Saturday sleep in
2. Steiner School fete
3. Saturday family dinner at Casa Nostra
4. New hat from the Sunday markets

My parents were in town for the weekend & Lulu had a wonderful cuddle filled weekend. Alice Springs turned it on with great winter weather, fetes and markets. Last night I made osso bucco with polenta for the first time using this recipe, but we were too busy eating it to photograph it. The perfect end to a fun weekend.

Sunday - rest day

Monday - Day 4 30 Day Shred plus 3.54km walking.
Lulu woke up just after the warm up, but chatted to Mr Sun for ten minutes before falling back to sleep. She stayed asleep long enough for me to also have a shower after the Shred. She didn't really sleep at all for the rest of the day, but bless her for sleeping when I needed her to.

Tuesday - Day 5 30 Day Shred plus 5.11km walking.

Wednesday - After a big Tuesday night, Lulu & I slept in and spent most of the morning in our pjs. In the afternoon I watched a movie while she slept. No work out.

Thursday - Running late for weekly mother's group coffee so no morning work out. No afternoon work out either.

Friday - Week 4 C25K 2km running, 7.75km walking

Saturday - With the Steiner School fete in the morning & a linen party in the afternoon, too busy for exercise.

Cold nights

Friday, May 25, 2012

The last few nights Lulu has started waking up again during the night. She sleeps from about 8:30pm until around 4:50am. A friend mentioned yesterday that she just might be waking up because she's cold. It's been getting down to 1 degrees Celsius at night & poor Lulu is in her own room now, the cold could just be the reason. So last night we bundled her up well with her sleeping bag and two blankets. I checked on her through the night to make sure her blankets were still on & what do you know, she slept straight through, 7:30pm until 6:30am! Toasty warm.

Pure baby sleeping bag from here.

Alone time

All day Monday nothing would settle Lulu. She slept briefly in the morning & again for about 15mins in the afternoon, but for the rest of the day her gums were sore & she just couldn't get comfy.
Nick had organised to go to the movies that night with a mate, which he hasn't done since she was born, and based on her fussy day I was prepared for a tough night solo with Lulu, but as Nick left just after 8pm she finished her bottle & promptly fell asleep, in a deep sleep until 6:30am!! It was like I had a night at home alone! Amazeballs!! I watched an episode of Greys Anatomy & fell asleep early, the party animal that I am. It was delightful. Greys Anatomy is my night alone guilty pleasure, what's yours?

Exercise Stats

Sunday, May 20, 2012

You would think that with running most days and eating right - portion wise as well as no junk food, cutting out sugar (except the occasional nighttime piece of chocolate) I would have lost at least a tiny bit of weight. Well, I haven't.

So I've kicked it up a notch and started the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. The shred was recommended by a friend, who said it was punishing, but gave results (read a 'how to' here). Plus it's only 20mins a day, who doesn't have that kind of time?

Inspired by Briana who records her amazing workout stats at the end of each post, each week I'm going to record my exercise stats. This way at the end of the week I can look back with accomplishment and say that I've actually done something, even if the scales don't move. I'm using the GPS app MotionX to record the Kms.

Sunday - No exercise, Mother's Day

Monday - Day 2 30 Day shred, 4.34km walking

Tuesday - Half of a 30 day shred session (Lulu woke up in the middle) plus week 3 C25k - 5.57km walking/running

Wednesday - Day 3 30 Day shred

Thursday - 5.50km walking

Friday - Week 3 C25km - 8.31km walking/running

Saturday - rest

Total - 23.72kms

On to next week....

Mr Sun

Saturday, May 19, 2012

Mr Sun is Lulu's best friend. She will chat to him for hours (well, baby hours anyway). Her makes her laugh, he makes her cry, then her makes her smile again.
We have one Mr Sun on the car capsule and there is another Mr Sun on her play mat. Well, the other day she was chatting to the Mr Sun on the playmat and I stuck my head in and asked 'hey Lulu what are you chatting about. Would you believe she stopped talking & gave me this indignant 'Mum WHY are you interrupting us?' look? I apologised, moved away and she resumed her conversation with Mr Sun. It's starting already.
Too much playmat fun

A room of one's own

Friday, May 18, 2012

Guess who slept in her own room for the first time last night? Lulu's been in our room since she was born, but her noisy sleeping and the night light was making it a bit of a challenge. She loves being in her room when she gets her nappy changed & is so fascinated by everything in there, it seemed a shame that she wasn't using the room more.

Last night she had a feed around 8:30 and was so sleepy afterwoulds that I thought I'd try just laying her in the cot to fall asleep. I sat next to her reading 'the Cat in the Hat' as she fell asleep, by herself, in her own room. Amazing. She's so grown up now.

This morning she woke us up with a cry as usual, however she normally continues to cry until we pick her up (do I need to say that this interval isn't very long or will you assume it isn't?), but today she stopped after the first cry & when I went into her room she was awake & staring happily at her mobile. She gave me a huge smile and then continued to look at the mobile. Success. A happy baby in her own space.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

The sweetest thing happened the other night. More like early the other morning. It gets quite cool in the early hours of the morning now, it can get down to just 3 degrees. Lulu had managed to work her way out of the blankets and woke us up crying because she was freezing. I went over and picked her up and as soon as I picked her up she immediately stopped crying and started smiling instead. So sweet. We let her sleep the rest of the night with us and as I laid her down she was still smiling, asleep.

Downstairs Renovations - Before and After

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Downstairs is open plan with the kitchen flowing into the dining 'room' and then into the lounge 'room'. When I lived here before the space just felt huge (probably because I had very little furniture) and white. This time I wanted a little more colour. We took up the carpet and laid tiles and we've added the green wall, Nick's colourful cd racks, our tiny art collection & bright cushions.

In the kitchen we added a blackboard wall - perfect for shopping lists & recording what you have in the pantry/fridge as I always forget & then make the same meals over and over. We also added new tap wear, an instant refresher.
And this is what it looked like before...

First Mother's Day

Monday, May 14, 2012

A few pics from my Mother's Day. I was lucky enough to have a sleep in & when I did come downstairs, these wonder flowers and a present were waiting for me. The present was the fabulous yellow bag. We went out for breakfast/lunch. I was even more lucky to get an afternoon nap!! Then we went out for dinner with Nick's mum & her partner. I wore this awesome sparkly dress I picked up at Sportsgirl while we were in Adelaide. My mother-in-law gave me flowers too. I really was spoilt. A fabulous day.

Time - Are you Mom enough?

Friday, May 11, 2012

The new issue of Time magazine discusses attachment parenting which comprises, among other things co-sleeping and breastfeeding longer than 'normal'.

While I haven't yet read the article (as far as I know, it wont be out in Australia for a few weeks), the Huffington Post has labeled the cover 'shocking'. Rather than a discussion about the pros and cons of attachment parenting, they've opted for the 'Is Time's breastfeeding cover going too far?' option. I don't think we need publications like the Huffington Post sensationalising breastfeeding. When you can't show breastfeeding photos on facebook I think the cover is bold.

As for the 'are you mom enough?' I think we have enough guilt about our parenting styles without Time holding up breastfeeding a three year old as the ideal. Even if this isn't what the article says, it's what the cover suggests.

What does this cover say to you?

Minty Meets Munt

Monday, May 7, 2012

I came across the Spring 2012 Collection from Minty Meets Munt on the Vine the other day. I am loving their bright colours, especially the turquoise eyeshadow and the yellow clutch. I hadn't heard of Minty Meets Munt before, but when I popped into Mixed Lollies on Friday, they had a few pieces from a previous collection in store. It's so exciting when you find something new online & can find it locally.

All photos are from the Vine - see more here

Wide Open Space

Friday, May 4, 2012

The May long weekend is this weekend, which means it's time for Wide Open Space, a music festival held at Ross River. You can read all about the last time we went here. This year Nick's cousin is getting married on the Saturday. We are really looking forward to this party, plus Nick is a groomsman - fun, but it means we can only attend Wide Open Space on Friday night, no camping for us (I am not sad about this - My theme song is this and you can read about my aversion to camping here

The Friday night at Wide Open Space just happens to be the night that Frank Turner is playing! Yay! I can't wait. From Wembley Stadium to Ross River, no venue to small.

Cranky Lulu & possible teeth?

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Lulu on her playmat, wearing a onesie by Milky
Do you ever have one of those days where the crankiness never seems to go away? Well, Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday were cranky days for us. Monday afternoon Lulu would fall asleep only to wake up a few minutes later with gas or a little spew or just general crankiness. She woke up during the night with gas and then wanted a tiny feed, which she hasn't done since her needles a  few weeks ago.

Tuesday all bets were off. If I held her she'd cry, if I put her down she'd cry. It was also the only morning that I thought I'd try and go back to bed instead of taking her with me for a run. Maybe things would have been different if we'd just gone running? She had really rosy cheeks and wasn't eating all her food. By the afternoon I was determined to get her to sleep for more than 20 mins so we went for the biggest walk and she slept for about 1.5hrs with a little bit of wake time in between. That evening she was much better & even played on the playmat while I prepared dinner. Success.

It does look as though she might be getting a tooth, there's a tiny white spot on her upper gum, however from everything I read teeth don't come until about 4 months and she's only 10 weeks, plus teeth normally come in on the bottom first. Could it be teeth? When did your child start teething?

Bride Barbie

Remember my indecision in purchasing the very pretty Twilight Bride Barbie (see here)? Well, after stewing on it all day I decided to go back the next day and get it, plus one for a friend. Target rewarded me for my patience with 20% off, yay! I am not even going to try and pretend that I bought her for my baby daughter.

She really is the prettiest Barbie. Think it's time to take her out of the box...

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Last week we went on a little mini-break to Adelaide. Lulu met some of her relatives & we had a chance to chill out by the beach. It was delightful.
