Frockin' up - Mixed prints

Friday, August 31, 2012

I may have gone a bit crazy on the mix of prints here. I see pictures of girls mixing it all up and love it but I really don't think I can do it. It seems to go against my sense of everything matching.

Stripes, leopard, a big red heart? Bit too much? What do you think?

Sleep & teeth update

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Ok so last night she was back to no good & up for nearly an hour from 3:40, just cranky. Also up at 12:30am crying madly. Agh. But a friend of mine with a baby the same age was up at least 10 times last night, so I guess we had it good. Below is a file photo from last week, sending good vibes for tonight.

Sleep & Teeth

Here is a snapshot of the last few nights*, may we remember this when ever thinking of having another child and may it serve as a waring to those contemplating babies.....

Sunday night
- Wouldn't go to sleep at all though she was so tired. We eventually walked her in the pram at 9:30pm & she fell asleep.
- Slept in the pram in our room until 12 am then woke crying. Was transferred to our bed after we settled her down.
Wakes up crying numerous times between 12 & morning but settled with just a tummy rub because she was lying between us.

Monday night
- Falls asleep while feeding transfers to cot ok at 8
- Wakes up at 10, can't get back to sleep, rock & rock,  eventually drops off.
- Wakes again at 12 but falls asleep again after a cuddle
- 1:58am crying again. This time can't calm her down so we give her some food and panadol. She falls asleep while eating. Once she's finished the bottle we transfer her to our bed.
- Wakes crying again 3 more times before morning but can settle with a tummy rub.
- 6:30am I wake & start getting ready for work

Tuesday night
- Slept on me from 5:30 til just after 6.
- Up for a bit but so cranky, Nick took her for a walk in the pram at 7:30, she dropped off to sleep
- Wakes up as we were sitting down to dinner at 8:30. Stayed awake through dinner, then went off to sleep with a bit of rocking after a bit of food, teething gel and panadol.
- Wakes up at 12 am crying but resettles with some rocking
- Wakes up at 2 am crying. Won't resettle. We give her food and panadol. She falls asleep before finishing the half the bottle. Put her in bed with us. Doesn't wake till 8. Success! She's getting better, though it may be too close to call this.

- Slept in the pram from 3:50 until 4:30 so I keep her occupied (Nick too once he's home from work) with various activities plus a bath until 7:30 when the real crankiness is setting in. Doesn't want food until I lie her in bed then she cries and cries so I try the food again. It works. She falls asleep eating, doesn't drink more than half the bottle. Transfers to cot.
- Cries out at 8:30ish but resettles.
- Wakes up crying at just after 9. Nick changes her nappy, gives her the rest of the bottle & some panadol. She's asleep in the cot now. Hopefully for the rest of the night....

*Please bear in mind that we are considered lucky with the sleep thing, Lulu (when not teething) normally sleeps from 7ish to 6:30ish. For some people the above is what happens from the birth of the baby onwards.

Blogshop Sydney

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

I have wanted to go to Blogshop ever since we were living in Vancouver. Money was a little tight and I was just getting past the worst of the nausea being pregnant with Lulu so it wasn't an optimal time for me to travel. I missed out but I badgered their site to bring it to Australia and now they are & I'm going! Yay!!  See you in Sydney.....

Sunsets, Soil & Gin

Friday night sunset at the end of our street

Teething trouble pretty much wiped out our weekend but I was able to sneak out to Wearable Arts Saturday night and Nick was able to go for a long mountain bike ride late Sunday morning. Nick's mum watched Lulu while we had naps Saturday afternoon (She saved us after our terrible teeth night) & while we bought soil for our new herb garden Sunday afternoon. We ended Sunday with a late afternoon gin & tonics with Nick's mum on her lovely back porch. A nice way to end an 'eventful' weekend.

Teeth Trouble with a capital T

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

These two tiny teeth are Trouble, that's right trouble with a capital T. Friday night Lulu went to sleep at her normal time, stirred at about 9:45, then woke at 10:30 just as we were about to go to bed. We changed her, fed her & then she didn't go back to sleep. We gave her some teething gel (the special stuff from the Adelaide Children's Hospital), we rocked her, she spewed on her sleepy sack and just wouldn't go back to sleep. Agh. Nick did the first shift. I went to sleep for an hour, which turned into 3 & when I woke up she was STILL awake. She'd dozed in between but not proper sleep. Nick went to bed & I gave her some Panadol, changed her nappy, rocked her in my arms, fed her more food in the rocking chair & she finally fell asleep at about 3:45, listening to her favourite album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by the Flaming Lips. I put her in the cot, she didn't stir & then I want back to bed in our room. The night before she'd slept fine in her own room & normally if she wakes in the night, she'll go back to sleep in our bed without too much trouble & without a nappy change & food. But these teeth, these teeth.

Did your baby have trouble teething? Any tips? She's wearing an amber necklace & she had it on all Friday night, I forgot to take it off her. She also had her six month needles on Friday, which I would have put off till next week if I'd felt the tooth coming up before hand. I hope things settle down for her (and for us) soon.

Tiny teeth

A tiny tooth is poking through! Our baby's growing up. She's had a terrible teething rash around her mouth all week and has been fairly cranky for her for the past two weeks so it was a wonderful surprise this morning when she grabbed my finger, stuck it in her mouth & I could feel the little tooth poking through. The one next to it looks like this one did a few days ago so she may end up with two by this time next week.

She also had her six month injections today. Poor thing, needles & teeth. It's all too much for a tiny baby.

Little dogs, birthdays, fun

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Lulu & I had an extra long weekend and flew to Adelaide to catch up with my family & help my little brother celebrate his 30th birthday. Thirty, wow, we are getting old. It was a quiet celebration, a family dinner at my parents. Lulu tried mum's home grown broccoli & loved it, choosing it over the pumpkin. She also loved my mum's dog & my Aunt's little dogs, giggling and giggling at them, when a month ago she wasn't even aware they were there.

Naps are for Nannas not babies

Friday, August 17, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

What is it with babies and sleep this week? It's like they've all decided that sleep isn't for babies. Naps? Only for Nannas. Seriously since last Friday Lulu hasn't gone to bed before nine and hasn't napped for more than 20 mins and this was only in her pram. AGH.

If she wakes in the early hours of the morning we've been putting her in bed with us and she's been going back to sleep, so we really can't complain, there are no 3am feeds or anything, it's just odd than our baby has drastically changed her sleeping pattern.

The other thing that's changed is that from about 5pm Lulu's decided that she must be with one of us at all times. I cannot briefly leave the room at all, this includes going anywhere within the room where she can't see me. It's been challenging to say the least, especially Friday and Sunday afternoon when she decided this clingy period would happen much earlier when I was home alone. It sucks going to the toilet while your baby is crying (only crying because I am not there with her, she's fed & changed).

I mentioned The Wonder Weeks the other day. It just happens that she's entered the Relationships leap. The book says that from 23 weeks some babies will become more clingy, nap less and cry more and this is EXACTLY what has happened. During this leap babies start to perceive distance, how far away things are, how small they are compared to everyone else. This understandably makes them need you to be closer to them & makes them more upset when you walk away. It can take them about a month to adjust. We just have to wait it out & give her many more cuddles in the meantime.

Lulu & I are heading to Adelaide for a few days to help my little brother celebrate his 30th. I am dreading the plane flight with this new Lulu, but hopefully many distractions will keep her occupied.

Have a lovely weekend & we'll catch you Monday xx

Frockin' up - Saturday night

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Last Saturday night we enjoyed a rare occurrence, going out without Lulu. Her Grandma offered to baby-sit while we helped a friend celebrate his birthday. Though we were going to a place where we can normally take Lulu, it was nice to have a night to ourselves.

Painted nails, new dress & jacket, champagne, a great night out. This is what I wore:

Kangaroo & Polenta with a Caper Mint Sauce

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App Nick credits the making of this dish with the cementing of our relationship. The dish then gained mythical powers as I only ever made it the one time due to the polenta bit being a little too hard. Too much stirring. But recently we found quick polenta that cooks with only 3 minutes of stirring, rather than 20. So it was time to crack this dish out again.

As usual I forgot to double check the ingredients, leading Nick on a search for mint at 7 at night. Luckily his mum came to the rescue with dried mint. We need to plant a herb garden, anyhoo...

The recipe is..

Make polenta according to the instructions on the quick cooking packet.

1 lemon juice & Zest
1 clove garlic
1 tsp capers
8 sprigs mint
4 chopped anchovies (do not skip, if you chop small then blend nicely in the sauce)
Mix all but the anchovies and mint. Add 100ml olive oil. Warm to serve. Before serving add anchovies and mint.

Do not over cook Kangaroo. A minute or so each side in a hot fry pan is all it really needs. It should be served medium rare otherwise it will be as tough as hoe leather.

On getting stuff done

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App
I think I may have overdone it yesterday. Lulu was so good all day I got heaps done, two loads of washing, cot sheets changed, weeding around half of the pool - Lulu spent most of the time while I was weeding giggling at me, seriously, she thought I looked hilarious. She slept while we walked into town to have lunch with Nick & slept on the way back, plus a little bit when we arrived home, enabling be to crack the cover of the new issue of Real Living.

But as soon as it got dark, Lulu returned to her new clingy, crying state. We can't leave her for a second or she bursts into tears. She refuses to go to bed, finally giving into sleep while we feed her at around 9, when just last week she was in bed asleep for the night by 7. We miss our nights. We're back to almost that newborn state where one of us has to be with her at all times. Hopefully this phase wont last too long....

As for overdoing it, when Nick arrived home I also did the Shred, then cooked jalapeno popper chicken for dinner and this morning I woke up with a pulled muscle in my side. Stretches and ibuprofen will hopefully help, but boy does it feel good to have a few things done around here.

Dinners, Drives & No Sleep

Monday, August 13, 2012

Ah the weekend. This weekend was busy, really busy. Friday night was a farewell dinner for one of my work colleagues, a sad occasion, we've worked together since I left uni and she's taught me pretty much everything I know about applied anthropology plus been a fabulous friend.

Saturday Lulu & I ventured out to the Old Timer's Fete. There were so many people there, you couldn't really look at anything. We purchased three small cactuses and left fairly quickly. Saturday night was a friend's birthday. Lulu was looked after by her grandma & we had a night out on the town, well a night at Montes, the local bar/restaurant.

Sunday Nick had another mountain bike downhill comp. Lulu and I went to a lovely brunch at Nick's Aunt's, then Lulu spent the afternoon refusing to sleep & being cranky because she needed to sleep. This cumulated in a long drive to get her to sleep & keep her asleep. She managed 30 mins sleep and refused to go to sleep in the evening too, finally crashing out at just after 9. Have you heard of the Wonder Weeks? Well, she's in the middle of a leap & it is giving her TROUBLE.

Late nights & a slight hangover tend to bite you in the butt when you have a cranky baby & all you really want to do is crash out in front of the telly.

This week has been short to say the least. With the holiday Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday working, Mother's Group Thursday morning & a cranky Lulu Friday afternoon, the week was over before I knew it. I managed to do the shred every day this week. Whoo!

On the interwebs this week....

A reminder from Marieke Hardy that your little bit of kindness just may help another through a day or a plane flight - her story will make you cry.

Remember that Vogue interview with Syria's first lady from early last year? The journalist behind the piece, Joan Juliet Buck tells the story behind the debacle which saw her fired.

Nick asked a question of the Age drive magazine and they published the answer! There was a tiny bit of fiction mixed in with the question.

New Peter Alexander PJ Collection

Friday, August 10, 2012

Peter Alexander, who makes my favourite PJs, has a new collection, a circus collection. Above are my favourite pieces from the collection. To be honest I would wear the nightie in the middle as a dress. I love it. What do you think? Could I get away with wearing the pink nightie as a dress? The confetti pants on the left are just so colourful. The other nightie comes with the bows! You must check out the strongman in the catelouge, pretty cool.

Frockin' up - Friday Lunch

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Last Friday Lulu & had a lunch date with one of my good friends. There is a cafe with great food at her work, just a little way out of town (we had to drive 10 minutes to get there - a long drive by Alice Springs standards). We've been meaning to go there for a while now, but it never quite happened (such a ling drive!) so I was glad we finally made it out here. This is what we wore:

Tools for introducing solids

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

To be honest I was a little baffled about introducing solids. Though I had read most of the Baby Lead Weaning book, it wasn't until I'd chatted with a few mum's whose babies are just a little older than Lulu that I became a little more confident. We've only begun introducing solids for just over a week now, but it has been fun. Here are a few products we've found useful for baby led weaning:

1. Bellmay's organic toothiepegs teething rusks - Organic with less sodium than other rucks. I wasn't sure about rusks as the Baby Led Weaning book is against them (too much salt) but after seeing a friend's six-month-old much down on a rusk like there's no tomorrow, I figured they were fine, especially easy for when we're out and about. Not for everyday, but every now and then is fine, I think. This brand is Australian & it's always nice to buy Australian products.

2. Mamas and Papas baby snug - much like the more famous bumbo, Lulu sits in this chair to eat. Unlike the bumbo, however, the green insert comes out so she can still fit in the seat when she's bigger.

3. Heinz baby basics soft tip weaning spoons - Lulu loves to chew on these, with a tiny bit of food on the end.

4. Heinz first tumbler - without handles Lulu can just grasp this tumbler like she does her bottle. It also has a special valve that stops formula from falling out if it's tipped over.

5. Bellmay's organic apple and cinnamon breakfast cereal - This really doesn't have that much flavour but all the ingredients are organic and there is much, much less sodium, fat and sugar than in adult cereal.

Is there anything you would add to this list? The list is by no means exhaustive, but I hope it helps someone else who may be as baffled as I was.

Read about how we began on solids here.

Confession time

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

I have a confession to make. Remember this post where I proudly wrote about Lulu having a room of her own? Well at the new house she still has a room of her own, but does she sleep in it? No.

When we first moved in it was so cold we thought it best for her cot to be in with us. Not long after that Lulu became sick and with the cough we wanted to keep her close incase she woke up coughing in the night. We wanted to hear that little cough & you know what? The little cough is much better, but it just hasn't quite gone away so she's still with us, all these weeks later.

And another confession.... when she wakes in the early morning say 6:30/7/7:30, we change & feed her in the bedroom & then put her down to sleep in our bed. She will go back to sleep for at least an hour or too. It's bliss. I know some people don't agree with co sleeping, but it works for us. We move our pillows aside & she gets to stretch out in the big space between us, happy as a clam.

Do you have anything to confess? Now's the time....

The house pillows and linen were a gift for Lulu from her Aunt - what a lucky little girl.

We love long weekends

Monday, August 6, 2012

Ah long weekends, oh how we will miss you. This weekend was the last long weekend until Christmas. No more public holidays, just full working weeks. For those who work full working weeks. We made good use of the long weekend this long weekend. I got a hair cut while Lulu & Nick had coffee time together in town, Nick & I saw a movie together while his mum watched Lulu, Nick competed in a 6 hour enduro with a team of three, we took down our saloon laundry and we weeded the garden. Not too bad. How was your weekend? Get up to much? I hope it was lovely.

Baby led weaning

Friday, August 3, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App
For introducing Lulu to solids, we're following the principles of baby led weaning. Baby lead weaning simply means letting babies feed themselves. For the first few months babies continue to get all their nutrients from milk (formula or breastmilk) so food can be something they have fun exploring. So many different textures and tastes, why should food be boring, spoon fed mush?

Lulu is just over five months and we've started her on her first solids. On Saturday she had a little bit of baby cereal. I tried to spoon feed her the first bite but she wasn't having a bar of it, so I gave her the spoon with a tiny bit on the end and she chewed on it while I ate my cereal. It sure was fun watching her explore the cereal.

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App
While Nick cooked dinner the other night (oh yeah a bit of an awesome husband brag here) he sat Lulu in her chair and gave her a snow pea to munch on. Boy did that keep her occupied. She chucks her teethers away within about five seconds but the snow pea she held onto for a good twenty minutes (with a few accidental drops). She didn't break the skin, so none of the peas got out. I realise this may be quite hazardous and it is probably better to use celery sticks, but if you are watching carefully, snow peas are ok.

At the moment the amount of solids she's actually eating is miniscule, so I figure starting her a few weeks before the baby led weaning recommended 6 months isn't too bad. When did your baby start on solids?

Frockin' up - another work day

Thursday, August 2, 2012

A few weeks ago I was in Adelaide and although my lovely husband encouraged me to buy something nice for myself, not just stuff for Lulu, however we were only ever in huge malls and the things there were not so appealing. When I arrived back in Alice Springs I headed to Mixed Lollies one lunchtime to see what they had. Turns out they had a lot. I was luckly enough to pick up three skirts, a dress, (skirts & the dress from local designer Lucy Hope) a top & a jacket. So this week I wore two of the skirts to work...
