Trainwreck - have you seen this movie? I don’t know about you, but I went into the theatre expecting it to be funny and, don't get me wrong, it really was laugh out loud hilarious but what I didn't expect was for it to also be sad. I try not to even see trailers these days as they tend to give away the entire movie and if it's a movie I really want to see then I don't try to read to much about it either, so it came as a complete shock that Trainwreck was also a tearjerker.

Spoiler Alert
If you haven't seen this movie and you don't want to read any spoilers then don't read on. If you don't mind spoilers or have seen this movie then please continue.

The screenplay for Trainwreck was written by Amy Schumer and the film fictionalises her life. However, it is not an autobiography, most of the film is fiction, with some elements mirroring reality. It is incredibly funny, laugh out loud kind of funny, but it also has a second storyline about Amy and her sister taking care of their dad who has MS. The Dad has recently moved to a nursing home and one of the first few scenes is Amy and her sister fighting about what to keep when cleaning out his house. This part is based on Amy’s real life, as her Dad does suffer from MS.

The film explores this one step further with her dad passing away. Well, as the film was marketed as funny & for various reasons, including, I guess, other journalists not wanting to give away a massive spoiler, never mentioned it. I was completely unprepared for the Dad's death.  I assumed that at the conflict point they would eventually make up as the movie progressed but to have him suddenly die was quite a shock. Queue excessive crying, I balled and balled. It hit a little close to home. In the last few months there have been quite a few cancer diagnosis (and deaths) amongst my friend’s parents and it is so confronting to think that this is what we will be experiencing more of in the coming years. I know it is the circle of life. Things are going to happen. We will weather the storm and it is good to be reminded that we will all make it through.

Ps Our Town - on losing too many too soon
