The birthday girl taking a nerdy selfie
This weekend reminded us why we live here in Alice Springs. Friday night mexican feast at a friends' place that we walked to. Delicious. Saturday night 30th birthday with the theme 'Nerdy 30'. The party venue was close enough for us to walk to (getting tooted at because of our outfits!). I never knew there were so many baby sitters in Alice Springs, with about half the party needing a sitter, it was just so great for everyone to be able to let loose without having to worry about what their kid was getting up to (Thankyou Lulu's Grandma!). It feels like it's been far too long since we had a night out with friends where you could get through a whole sentence without being interrupted. Nick left at 1 to pick up Lulu, but I stayed out until 2:30am! Amazing. And if you are looking for a venue for a party, Piccolos is for hire & chef Mark Bizley creates the most tasty canap├ęs. You can't go wrong. Plus it's fun watching everyone walking past Piccolos wishing they were at the party.

Sunday chill day & another 2nd  birthday party for Lulu to attend. This was the last of the mum's group bubs to turn 2 and the end of the birthday parties for a while. I think we'll miss our weekend party ritual. Nick made brownies in the afternoon as a thank you for his mum's wonderful babysitting and he & Lulu walked them over in the early evening before we bundled a tired Lulu into bed.

I do so love this town! Liveable, walkable & everyone just creates things to do. Thank you Alice Springs. The hot weather has finally broken and as I sit here writing this a cool breeze blows that comes from the outdoor rather than our aircon. This may be attributing to my good mood?! Hope your weekend was just as enjoyable xx

DIY Cupcake Wrapper Bunting

Thursday, January 30, 2014

 photo DIY-cupcake-wrapper-bunting_zpse245607e.jpg
I'm not one for craft projects that take forever to complete, but I am partial to a little bunting. This garland is so simple and easy to make, all you need is the cupcake wrappers, string, glue and a pair of scissors.

1. Flatten out the Cupcake wrapper.
2. Put some glue on one half of the wrapper
3. Place the string in the centre of the wrapper
4. Fold the wrapper in half & make sure it sticks together. Add more glue if it doesn't.
5. When you've added enough wrappers, cut your string and tie them up.

And there you have it, the easiest bunting ever!

Stills from a Birthday Week

1. Mess that gathered while I baked.

2. Early birthday treat of cinnamon rolls. Lulu loves to help with the baking.

3. Birthday cupcake wrapper bunting - I will post a DIY- for my mexican fiesta dinner. That dinner was awesome, but seriously it took all afternoon to cook.

4. Birthday run - If you'd told me on my 24th birthday that I would be going for a run on 34th birthday I would have thought you were kidding. But the run made me feel great. Well worth it.

5. Lulu met me at the front door after my run with a present. A lovely way to be greeted.

6. Bathroom selfie at my birthday dinner. Dinner baby free thanks to my mother-in-law who baby sat. We hadn't been out to dinner just us in a very long time. But I think it might have been nice to celebrate with Lulu. She was just so excited about the whole birthday thing and she really wasn't happy to be left out at the end. We went out for dinner as a family a few nights later and that made up for it.

Are birthdays a big thing for you? We tend to make a fairly big deal of birthdays, with week long birthday events. It's great.

Luckily she was a good sport about it and of course she looked way better in it than I did :) 2. Saturday afternoon snack of grapes and yogurt buttons 3. The engagement party Sunday afternoon 4. The Hungry Caterpillar birthday cake from Sundays' first birthday party 5. Nick's fabulous paella Friday night

Hope you had a wonderful weekend full of friends and fun x

Party Link Love

This week saw us moved back home, with the new toilet installed. Post renovation photos will be forthcoming once a few finishing off jobs are completed. Lulu's cough is better but not gone and my back is on the mend, I even exercised (brisk walking) a few nights this week.

And now it's the weekend again. What are your plans? We have a bit of a party weekend, with a dinner Friday, a farewell Saturday night and an engagement party Sunday night.  To celebrate parties this weeks links have a slight party theme:

Great tips on how to run an event - everything from the venue to the vibe to your outfit from Bri of DesignLoveFest

I totally forgot about party favours until we went to the first of the first birthdays. I didn't do them for Lulu's party but I will when she's bigger. The Leggo party favours Ronnie, of Pink Ronnie, put together would be fun to give out.

In Lieu of Presents.....

Friday, March 1, 2013

 photo unicef_zps2457fa7b.jpg

For Lulu's first birthday last week, we asked that guests not bring presents, which may have seemed a little abrupt on the invite, but we love having parties and our friends have been so generous to us over the years, plus Lulu has been given so much already she honestly doesn't need for another thing. Many people respected this request, but some live to give & brought a gift anyway.

Two of our friends came up with the best way to give a gift without giving a gift. They gave donations to UNICEF on Lulu's behalf. Instead of Lulu receiving a gift, 'she' gave 600 sachets of micro nutrient powder, three local language story books, 100 measles vaccines, 200 polio vaccines and 20 pencils and exercise books.

I think this is a fabulous idea, one I'll be using for upcoming kids birthdays. As for Lulu's next birthday party, many years from now (I don't see the need to hold one again until she starts asking for a party), I'll add a note to the invite which says 'in lieu of gifts please donate to UNICEF'.

First Birthday Party!

For Lulu's birthday we decided to have a bit of a celebration to mark the occasion of making it through the first year. We started the party in the early evening and it went well into the late evening. While they say that 1 year olds birthday parties aren't really about the one year old, Lulu certainly had a great time crawling around with the other babies and chasing the toddlers. I barely saw her all night! She partied until 8pm when my parents nicely offered to put her to bed for us.

Unlike our Christmas Party, this one was much more relaxing. We both had time to catch-up with friends and enjoy ourselves. We did a lot of party prep before hand so the evening ran smoothly. Plus our parents were there to help out too. As for the little details....

The Cake
As all good Aussie mothers who have gone before me, I baked a cake from the Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cake Book. As a kid each birthday we could pick a cake that mum would make us from this book. The book has the best cakes and they are pretty easy to make. Mine, however, looked nothing like the picture in the book, but the whole thing was eaten which is what counts. I look forward to Lulu being able to choose her own cake, just like Nick and I did as kids.

The crafty decorations:
Wall confetti - made from this cool idea of Beci Orpin's, as seen on the Sunday Collector blog.

Pompom Garland - While we were driving back from holiday I sewed pompoms bought from the newsagency (up close the pompoms are super uggly, you've probably seen them before & passed them by) onto a big line of thick string. We then cut the sting to length on the day to make the pompom garland.

Tissue paper garland - recycled from the Christmas party with new colours added.

The Toys
The Alice Springs Toy Library my friends. I can't say enough good things about the toy library. After paying a yearly membership, you can pick four free toys and keep them for two weeks. On top of that you can hire larger toys (like the slide above) for as little as $6 a fortnight! AMAZING!

The clothes:
Me - top Bardot, Jeans Lee, Hair clip Seed Baby
Nick - shirt Yoshi Jones, Jeans Levi
Lulu - top Rock Your Baby, pants Target

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!! We rang in the new year at a friend's home. A small bunch of people, kids running round, dancing and more than a few glasses of bubbly. It was delightful. The little miss snoozed in her pram for a few hours, then partied for a bit, ringing in the new year with us. She's a party animal that gal. We took the photo above about half an hour before midnight. I know I should have gotten her back to sleep as soon as she stirred but it sure was nice having her awake to celebrate with us.

How did you spend new years? To be honest I would have loved to be on the couch watching tv while the baby slept, but it was special spending new years with friends.

Frocks, Parties and Brunch

Monday, December 3, 2012

Another weekend of parties and frocks! Friday night we were invited to the Chief Minister's Christmas Party and since Nick & I would never miss a chance for free drinks and hob nobbing, we went. Saturday Lulu had a tummy bug & spent most of the day sleeping on us or in her cot, poor little thing. Saturday night we had our friend's mum's 60th to go to, so a sparkly dress and a new hair do was called for. Yes you may be adding up that we had two baby free evenings, lucky us. Sunday I went to a fundraising brunch for my friend Noosh who will be running in the London marathon next year. We had breakfast tacos - yummy. You can read all about the menu and Noosh's training on her blog Noosh Likes Running. An afternoon nap with Sir Elton was called for after all the parties and brunching. A weekend well spent.

Gingerbread, Baubles and Secret Santa

Monday, November 26, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppUploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppThe Christmas Parties have well and truly begun! This weekend we had Nick's work Christmas party. Each year his work does a secret santa where you have to make or recycle a present up to the value of $10. Then when they exchange the presents you can decide to pick one from the present pile or take one that someone else has already opened.  There is always one present that is way more popular than the others that circles through everyone - the shortbread cookies that one of the staff makes are always a hot ticket.

1. Ready to party
2. Nick's gingerbread cookies for his secret santa present - using this recipe
3. The calendar I made using paislee press template
4. Santa's little helper
5. Pretty table decorations
6. All partied out

Fairy lights, garlands and cactus

Monday, November 12, 2012

Saturday night was our not quite Christmas party and our parties sure have changed since the little miss was born. We had an early start time, a baby area (!) where Lulu and her three friends played and everyone had gone home by midnight (even the ones without kids) & to tell you the truth, I was ready for bed by then too...

We may have bit off a bit more than we could chew with the BBQ. I was exhausted by the end of the evening. What with preparing the house, making salads, getting drinks, feeding Lulu, dinner, giving her a bath, getting her to bed, finishing off the salads, serving food, clean up, it all was a bit much. Nick helped of course and so did some of our friends, but there wasn't that time just to kick back.

Have your parties changed since having kids? It might get a little easier once the babies are bigger & don't need us so much to help them play. However next year we should just host an after 8 cocktail party like last year. Then everyone can get a babysitter & relax.

Party, Party, Party

Monday, November 5, 2012

This was the weekend of parties, with a first birthday on Saturday and a baby shower Sunday. The first birthday party has a jumpy castle to keep the birthday girl's older cousins entertained and Nick & Lulu couldn't resist trying it. Too much fun - How was your weekend?

Stay tuned on Friday for a Mum/Daughter frockin' up party wear post.

Crazy busy

Sunday, October 9, 2011

I knew life would get crazy busy when we moved back to Alice Springs but I think I completely underestimated how crazy busy it would get. Between starting a full time temp job, picking out items to begin renovating my place (new tiles! new taps! Paint!), doctors & hospital appointments for my pregnancy, catching up with friends (I have a social life again - yay!), and day to day living (grocery shopping, washing etc) it has been non-stop go.

My body chucked a fit about this yesterday and today I'm taking it easy. Ticking off everything on my list of online jobs, doing some washing and then baking healthy biscuits (cookies) to take to work next week. What are you up to today? Taking it easy or super flat out?

PS I added a new postcard set to my etsy store this morning. In this set you get to choose 4 postcards from a selection of 8. Check it out here
I know it seems way too early for this, but I also added two sets of 3 Christmas gift tags, eccentric snowmen & gingerbread. Check them out here & here. Did you know it's only ten weeks until Christmas? ARG!

Happy 30th Birthday

Friday, May 6, 2011

Today is Nick's 30th Birthday! Happy Birthday!! He hasn't as yet decided what he wants to do for the day, but I'm sure it'll will involve some sort of partying!

Wing Wednesday

Sunday, April 17, 2011

Wednesday rolled around and we decided to partake in the weekly event that is Wing Wednesday. There are various wing deals around town, with the Grizzly offering 35c wings and the Big Eddy Pub offering 2 for 1 pound of wings. Since the Big Eddy wings were so delicious last Saturday, we decided to head there via my new short cut.
Us at the Big Eddy Pub
The walk took longer than anticipated with a few detours (it's weird how things look different on the ground than they did a few days ago on Google maps) and so we were more than a little hungry when we arrived. The Big Eddy Pub's Poutine is one of my favourite Canadian things. Poutine is chips (fries), gravy (chips and gravy already being a favourite) but then they add cheese curd as well. What could be better than chips, gravy & cheese? Genius! It does not make for a good photo though.
Hot wings, Poutine, Shots & Sculpture
The Ice Hockey was playing on the big tellys, wings were eaten and ciders/beer was being drunk. A Canadian evening was in full swing. I have been told that in Canada you call 'the ice hockey' just plain 'hockey' but you'd all be confused if I did that, surely? Anyway, as the band began (a band that did not do covers, rare, I know) and someone, M I'm looking at you, decided that we should do shots, despite the rest of us saying 'No, I don't think that's a good idea'. And of course it wasn't, tasty as those shots were.

Did you know that in Canada pubs do table service? Which means that they bring the shots to you! They also bring the third round of shots to you. Luckily we could all still stand as we left or that would have been rather embarrassing. As we walked out of the pub to start the journey home, the pub's courtesy bus/beford pulled up. Yep they offer free lifts back to town. Not only that, the driver is the Dad of the 'kids' who own the pub! Kind of like being driven home from a teen party.
Once we were safely within the confines of our home, our friend pulled out this record that he may have gotten from the pub. Made for some interesting post night out photos! I promise it'll be returned the next time we're at the Big Eddy....

Frockin' Up - wedding edition

Thursday, April 7, 2011

Last week I was back in Alice Springs for my friend's wedding. While I didn't have a chance to snap a photo before I left for the wedding (why am I always putting on nail polish ten minutes before I have to leave, then drying it with the hairdryer?) I did take one in my slightly drunken haze when I arrived home at 3am.
Dress: One Teaspoon
Slip: Sportsgirl
Necklace: F21
Tights: H&M
Boots: a random store in Barcelona

PS How beautiful was this wedding?

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

This past Sunday saw a burst of burst of creativity which lead to the birth of a new cocktail:Pour a dash of Cassis in the bottom of the glass, add a shot of vanilla vodka and top up with lemonade. Add some ice if you wish.

Now what shall I call it?

70s Party

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

We're partying the night away at a 70s party next Saturday so I spent some time on the weekend searching the interweb for 70s fashion inspiration. It's the beginning of winter in Alice Springs and nights are becoming quite cold so anything I wear needs to go with my mother's 70s leather coat she kindly gave me a few years ago. I keep seeing pictures of over the knee socks and as much as I'd love to rock that, I fear it'll be too cold. At the moment I'm thinking of my short onesie (yep I've sewn the button back on after a summer without it) with a cardigan, opaques and platform sandals. Time will tell.

Party Party Party

Saturday, May 15, 2010

This time last week we were preparing a surprise party for Nick's birthday. It was so much fun. N made a face cake, so much like Nick you could be forgiven for mistaking one for the other. Everyone pitched in and made curries. B & J even whipped up some quick bunting with the hot glue gun - pretty. Nick had no idea. A cunning plan perfectly executed.

Thanks Something and Something Else for the lend of the party house xx
